SPE Talks Tech: Tier differences, heavy oil innovation, and casing failures
Tuesday Jan 14, 2020
Tuesday Jan 14, 2020
Breaking down new articles in the January 2020 Journal of Petroleum Technology issue.
Trent Jacobs and Steve Rassenfoss cover emerging technology for the Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT), SPE's flagship publication. With SPE Talks Tech, our writers debate and discuss the hottest topics in the technical arena of the oil and gas industry.
In this episode:
JPT: What’s the Difference Between Tier 1 and Tier 2? Not Much
The formula for value in a shale play used to be simple, lease acreage in the best quality rock based on Tiers cover large areas. That standard is fading as it has become obvious that the rock is highly variable and the drilling and completion designs are just as important.
========================================
JPT: Heavy Oil Innovation Haunted by Low Oil Prices and Bad Memories
Heavy production spiked in two Canadian wells heated by an electric cable, but it is hard to find customers there at a time when Canadian oil prices and customers remember cables in the past that died young.
========================================
JPT: An Unconventional Challenge: Can Casing Failures During Hydraulic Fracturing Be Stopped?
The shale sector is seeking answers to a complex issue involving casing deformations that block access to long sections of a lateral. As opposed to frac hits, this rising problem is considered to be an intrawell phenomena.

Strengthening the Feedstock of Incoming Oil and Gas Talent with Shauna Noonan
Tuesday Jan 07, 2020
Tuesday Jan 07, 2020
There are growing concerns among industry professionals and academia about the declining ambitions toward a career in the oil and gas industry by our younger generation. Shauna Noonan addresses what she identifies as the three main challenges with attracting the next generation of engineers and geoscientists—negative public perception, unattractive business models, and inadequate opportunities for work-life balance.
Each month, Shauna joins The SPE Podcast to discuss her President's Column and to share her SPE journey. We'll end each of these podcasts asking the audience an interactive question.

Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan
2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization’s Engineering Core
From Shauna's January President's Column:
If we are to strengthen the feedstock of incoming talent into our industry, we need to provide a feeling of belonging, making a difference, job security, and work-life balance. This is a tall order for an industry that is not known for providing any of these elements. This is a significant change in direction compared to where our industry has traveled for decades. We must change course to ensure that our future workforce is the most talented, diverse, and innovative. If we cannot get the necessary talent into our industry, our future may be history.

Strengthening Ways To Disseminate Knowledge with Shauna Noonan
Tuesday Dec 03, 2019
Tuesday Dec 03, 2019
“To collect, exchange, and disseminate technical knowledge” are not only the first seven words of SPE’s mission but also what our society has excelled at over its storied history. — Shauna Noonan, 2020 SPE President
Each month, Shauna joins The SPE Podcast to discuss her President's Column and to share her SPE journey. We'll end each of these podcasts asking the audience an interactive question.
More from Shauna Noonan
Strengthening the Tools and Methods We Use To Disseminate Knowledge to Members
Strengthening the Quality of SPE's Technical Content
Reinforcing Core Strengths, Delivering Membership Value
Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan
2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization’s Engineering Core
From Shauna's December President's Column:
SPE is evaluating how we disseminate our content to make it more visually engaging, bite-sized, and, of course, available through mobile devices. This evaluation includes reviewing the traditional way of publishing technical content through manuscripts. Many students and young professionals want to receive content at a high level first, such as a one-page summary with conclusions, and then can elect to access the full paper if they need the details. SPE may be able to use videos, podcasts, webinars, and other formats to accomplish this.
One of my five focus areas during my time as your President will be to strengthen the tools and methods we use to disseminate knowledge to members. My objectives in this area are to create and elevate SPE initiatives to provide quality content in a variety of formats, such as print, video, and audio, so it is more engaging and consumable for all our members. I will also ensure that we will deliver on SPE’s Strategic Plan goals of having technical dissemination and exchange methods for easy access and delivery of content and tools through mobile devices.
Our society is membership-driven, and our programs are designed to serve the needs of our diverse and talented membership. To ensure that our society remains relevant for years to come, we need to anticipate the needs of our future members so they are prepared to drive the next wave of innovations and technological advancements for our industry.

Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan
2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization’s Engineering Core
From Shauna's November President's Column:
Our Society has a wealth of technical content, and it is rapidly growing. The value of that technical content derives from the quality of it. Having high-quality content will continue to strengthen SPE’s professional reputation, which is critical when entering new and emerging markets, attracting new members, and, most importantly, maintaining and engaging our current members and corporate sponsors. Our technical content that is consumed daily by our members is also the source of knowledge for the incoming generation, and we need to ensure that it is of the highest quality for our future innovators and leaders to excel.
To strengthen the quality of SPE’s technical content, I have outlined the following objectives:
Increase the awareness and use of all the tools and methods provided to authors to create high-quality papers
Educate program committees about their roles and responsibilities toward working with authors to ensure technical quality
Establish methods by which to track technical quality within SPE’s published and presented content
Support and develop a better process for formal peer review.
There are many ways we will work on strengthening the quality of our technical content. This is something that I am very passionate about and will champion as your SPE President. I am proud of the wealth of technical knowledge our Society has gathered over decades and grateful to all our members who contribute to our technical repositories. Our SPE logo is a symbol of technical excellence, and we all need to ensure our Society’s content and programs are worthy of that stamp of quality.
Question of the Month
What attributes do you think makes a high-quality paper?

Trent Jacobs and Steve Rassenfoss cover emerging technology for the Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT), SPE's flagship publication. With SPE Talks Tech, our writers debate and discuss the hottest topics in the technical arena of the oil and gas industry.
Correction: During the Podcast, Stephen Rassenfoss incorrectly named Kevin Raterman, the ConocoPhillips reservoir engineering advisor, who lead work at the company’s test site in the Eagle Ford, that did extensive research on hydraulically fractured reservoirs.
In this episode: US and Canadian shale are looking to move away from cookie-cutter fracturing, starting a big debate about how much customization can the sector practically do.

SPE Talks To: Shauna Noonan – Strengthen the Core
Tuesday Oct 08, 2019
Tuesday Oct 08, 2019
2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan discusses her SPE journey and unveils the theme for her presidency. Each month, Shauna will join The SPE Podcast to share her President's Column. We'll end each of these podcasts asking the audience an interactive question.

Reinforcing Core Strengths, Delivering Membership Value
Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan
2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization’s Engineering Core
From Shauna's October President's Column:
My involvement in SPE has proven to be essential at each pivotal point in my career. As a young engineer, I would gladly pay for my own SPE membership even though I was counting pennies. I considered the annual dues an investment in my career, which continued to pay off repeatedly. I took on many different roles within SPE during my 29 years as a member—embracing positions that would develop my technical knowledge and soft skills, such as leadership and communication. So many doors of opportunity have opened for me because I interacted with my fellow members and utilized what SPE had to offer. The time spent on those SPE activities has always been a wise investment.
As your president, I want to expand the value an SPE membership brings to both members and to companies that support their employees’ involvement in SPE. Our society is strong, yet I believe there are opportunities for improvement in the following areas:
Gain recognition as the technical and unbiased source of information about our industry
Develop trust within our industry and with the public
Expand the value of membership and attract new members
Illustrate value of attending SPE events against competitor events
Increase manuscript citations and engage those from outside our industry who want to publish with SPE
The theme of my presidency is “SPE Strong: Strengthening the Core.” For the society to continue to grow and expand, we must ensure that the core attributes that have allowed SPE to flourish remain extremely strong, both now and in the future. Based on feedback I have received from fellow members over the past few years, I plan to focus on the five areas summarized below and detailed further in my upcoming columns.
Question of the Month
Why did you become an SPE member?
Please send your response to president@spe.org.
