SPE Gaia Talks: Measuring What Matters
Wednesday Jun 24, 2020
Wednesday Jun 24, 2020
The panel addresses sustainability in the oil and gas industry using the lens of “Measuring what Matters”. Notwithstanding current global socio-economic conditions, oil and gas is being held to account on its environmental, social and governance performance against a backdrop of climate change and of biodiversity depletion.
Current sustainability measurement efforts by the industry are largely carried out to satisfy external stakeholders and even then, very imperfectly to the detriment of the public, policymakers, investors and the industry itself. This panel discussion will look at how better to serve these communities and in particular the internal stakeholders - the business decision-makers in business administration, operations, R&D and commercial roles – so that they and their business can better enable development that is truly sustainable. Our expert panel discusses the significant steps toward fit-for-decision data for both internal and external stakeholders.
PANELISTS:• Pavan Sukhdev, CEO GIST Advisory• Antoine Halff, Co-founder & Chief Analyst, Kayrros• Poppy Kalesi, Global Energy Director, Environmental Defense Fund• Vanessa Miler-Fels – Director of Energy Innovation and Impact, Microsoft
MODERATOR:Tatiana Mitrova – Director of Energy Center, Moscow School of Management

Strengthening Core Disciplines with Shauna Noonan
Tuesday Jun 16, 2020
Tuesday Jun 16, 2020
"From the beginning, SPE has focused on knowledge dissemination in four fundamental areas, which I refer to as the core disciplines: drilling, completions, reservoir (including geosciences), and production operations. These disciplines make up the bulk of coursework in most petroleum engineering degree programs, as well as the content of the SPE Petroleum Engineering Certification test. Still today, most of our members can identify themselves as being either a drilling, completions, reservoir, or production engineer." In this episode, Shauna Noonan discusses strengthening core disciplines.
Each month, Shauna joins The SPE Podcast to discuss her President's Column and to share her SPE journey. We'll end each of these podcasts asking the audience an interactive question.

From Shauna's June President's Column:
As we continue to expand and welcome more disciplines, we must ensure that we do not dilute the offerings and erode the value of being an SPE member for those in our core disciplines. At the same time, we need to ensure that these offerings are easily accessible, as many of these members work at field locations.

Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan
2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization’s Engineering Core
From Shauna's April President's Column:
While I have been a champion for innovation and technology development, I have also applied critical thinking in forming my opinion of such claims. The first questions I always ask myself are:
“Do I need this new technology?”
“Do I understand the root cause of the problem well enough to determine if applying existing technology and accepted practices cannot solve it?”
To adequately answer these questions, a good understanding of the fundamentals, such as fluid or mechanical dynamics, is often needed. Is this new tool or method genuinely innovative, or has it been born out of engineering ignorance?
Question of the Month
The Research and Development Technical Section will be reviewing SPE’s five grand challenges that our industry needs to overcome.
What additional technical challenges do you think we as an industry must focus research on?

SPE Live Discussion on COVID-19
Tuesday Apr 07, 2020
Tuesday Apr 07, 2020
COVID-19 has brought the world to a juddering halt and as of today has resulted in half the world’s population is subject to mandated measures restricting their movements from home. The oil and gas industry with operations around the world kicked into crisis management mode early, recognizing that early signs of virus transmission were likely characteristic of an emerging epidemic or worse. In many ways, the industry was ahead of the risk management curve with its experience, competency, access to data and capacity to share.
Oil prices have heightened the consequences of COVID 19 for the oil and gas industry and its thousands of employees and contractors around the world.
Our live recording, moderated by Johana Dunlop, SPE Technical Director of HSE & Sustainability, brings together four industry experts who will each speak to a particular aspect of how the industry is managing this double crisis and how it is affecting the individuals whose skills deliver energy to the world.
In this episode:
Francesca Viliani, Director of Public Health and Co-Head of Sustainability, International SOS
https://www.linkedin.com/in/francesca-viliani-7645b62
Fredrik Jervell, Leading Advisor Medical Services, Equinor
https://www.linkedin.com/in/fredrik-jervell-1aa15390/
Mark Scanlon, Head of HSE Good Practice, Energy Institute
https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-scanlon-32925517/
Rium Johnson, Chief HSSE Officer, NOV
https://investors.nov.com/management/rium-johnson
Key Topic Discussed:
- What are we seeing on the front lines; the reality companies and people are coping with?
- Anticipation for those wanting to return to work
- Field testing for COVID-19; steps taken
- Lessons learned from Sapovirus to help handle Coronavirus
- Where are test kits coming from?
- Debunking misleading examples
- What is a bowtie, who can produce one, and how can they be used to great effect?
- Battling the COVID-19 and oil price crisis as a service company
- Maintaining manufacturing in China with zero incidents
- Biggest concerns about the pandemic moving forward with more pressure on resources

Strengthening Knowledge Transfer in Unconventional Resources with Shauna Noonan
Tuesday Mar 10, 2020
Tuesday Mar 10, 2020
Collecting technical information can be challenging, especially if those who have it are not willing or able to share it. In this episode, Shauna Noonan discusses effectively, proactively seeking out the technical knowledge that our members both need and that the industry requires to meet the world’s demand for oil and gas.
Each month, Shauna joins The SPE Podcast to discuss her President's Column and to share her SPE journey. We'll end each of these podcasts asking the audience an interactive question.

Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan
2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization’s Engineering Core
From Shauna's March President's Column:
As an industry, we need to eliminate the mindset of “if it is not invented here, it won’t work.” We need to stop developing in geographical silos and become open to the potential that there may be lessons to learn from other basins around the world. We also need to stop operating in functional silos. The process of extracting hydrocarbons from complex reservoirs requires a relentless collaboration between operators, service providers, and members of the academic community. It is about more than just submitting papers to OnePetro in hopes that our members will find the content. We must hold events in these developing basins and proactively provide our members with the latest technology and applications to be successful.
Question of the Month
What topics do you think SPE needs to be more proactively addressing towards members?

Mike Rainbolt is an experienced completions engineer who is now a senior technical advisor for Abra Controls. Mike sat down with Trent Jacobs to discuss some of the highlights from the 2020 Hydraulic Fracturing Technology Conference held recently in the Houston area. More than 3,500 petrotechnical professionals went to the conference which this year highlighted some major advances around the so-called parent-child issues that all US shale producers face.
