Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan
2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization’s Engineering Core
From Shauna's April President's Column:
While I have been a champion for innovation and technology development, I have also applied critical thinking in forming my opinion of such claims. The first questions I always ask myself are:
“Do I need this new technology?”
“Do I understand the root cause of the problem well enough to determine if applying existing technology and accepted practices cannot solve it?”
To adequately answer these questions, a good understanding of the fundamentals, such as fluid or mechanical dynamics, is often needed. Is this new tool or method genuinely innovative, or has it been born out of engineering ignorance?
Question of the Month
The Research and Development Technical Section will be reviewing SPE’s five grand challenges that our industry needs to overcome.
What additional technical challenges do you think we as an industry must focus research on?

SPE Live Discussion on COVID-19
Tuesday Apr 07, 2020
Tuesday Apr 07, 2020
COVID-19 has brought the world to a juddering halt and as of today has resulted in half the world’s population is subject to mandated measures restricting their movements from home. The oil and gas industry with operations around the world kicked into crisis management mode early, recognizing that early signs of virus transmission were likely characteristic of an emerging epidemic or worse. In many ways, the industry was ahead of the risk management curve with its experience, competency, access to data and capacity to share.
Oil prices have heightened the consequences of COVID 19 for the oil and gas industry and its thousands of employees and contractors around the world.
Our live recording, moderated by Johana Dunlop, SPE Technical Director of HSE & Sustainability, brings together four industry experts who will each speak to a particular aspect of how the industry is managing this double crisis and how it is affecting the individuals whose skills deliver energy to the world.
In this episode:
Francesca Viliani, Director of Public Health and Co-Head of Sustainability, International SOS
https://www.linkedin.com/in/francesca-viliani-7645b62
Fredrik Jervell, Leading Advisor Medical Services, Equinor

Mark Scanlon, Head of HSE Good Practice, Energy Institute
https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-scanlon-32925517/
Rium Johnson, Chief HSSE Officer, NOV
https://investors.nov.com/management/rium-johnson
Key Topic Discussed:
- What are we seeing on the front lines; the reality companies and people are coping with?
- Anticipation for those wanting to return to work
- Field testing for COVID-19; steps taken
- Lessons learned from Sapovirus to help handle Coronavirus
- Where are test kits coming from?
- Debunking misleading examples
- What is a bowtie, who can produce one, and how can they be used to great effect?
- Battling the COVID-19 and oil price crisis as a service company
- Maintaining manufacturing in China with zero incidents
- Biggest concerns about the pandemic moving forward with more pressure on resources

Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan
2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization’s Engineering Core
From Shauna's March President's Column:
As an industry, we need to eliminate the mindset of “if it is not invented here, it won’t work.” We need to stop developing in geographical silos and become open to the potential that there may be lessons to learn from other basins around the world. We also need to stop operating in functional silos. The process of extracting hydrocarbons from complex reservoirs requires a relentless collaboration between operators, service providers, and members of the academic community. It is about more than just submitting papers to OnePetro in hopes that our members will find the content. We must hold events in these developing basins and proactively provide our members with the latest technology and applications to be successful.

The Influential Yet Delicate Balance of Mentoring with Shauna Noonan
Wednesday Feb 12, 2020
Wednesday Feb 12, 2020
There are multiple steps along the path to developing skill sets of young professionals. Coaching up technical know-how is critical, but equally important is providing an opportunity for those individuals to work on interpersonal skills in order to better navigate the industry.
Shauna Noonan discusses the importance of effectively mentoring bright, young minds as part of an industry-wide initiative to attract and retain incoming talent.
Each month, Shauna joins The SPE Podcast to discuss her President's Column and to share her SPE journey. We'll end each of these podcasts asking the audience an interactive question.

From Shauna's February President's Column:
For 2020, my goals include being both a mentor and mentee. While I believe I have much to contribute to our younger members, I also have much to learn. I want to encourage more of our members to set goals around mentoring and want to make this the month where we take time to recognize and thank those who have had a positive impact on us as our mentors.
Question of the Month
Name a mentor who made an impact on your career and why.
Please send your response to president@spe.org.

Separator Oil Shrinkage with Mathias Carlsen
Tuesday Jan 28, 2020
Tuesday Jan 28, 2020
Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) for shale developments has been one of the hottest topics in the technical arena for several years. In this episode, host Trent Jacobs talks to Mathias Carlsen, a petroleum engineering consultant and general manager for Whitson, about the true state of shale EOR, where it is and where it might be going. Carlsen also discusses a little known issue of “separator oil shrinkage” which can be a big issue for shale producers if not accounted for.

SPE Talks Tech: Tier differences, heavy oil innovation, and casing failures
Tuesday Jan 14, 2020
Tuesday Jan 14, 2020
Breaking down new articles in the January 2020 Journal of Petroleum Technology issue.
Trent Jacobs and Steve Rassenfoss cover emerging technology for the Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT), SPE's flagship publication. With SPE Talks Tech, our writers debate and discuss the hottest topics in the technical arena of the oil and gas industry.
In this episode:
JPT: What’s the Difference Between Tier 1 and Tier 2? Not Much
The formula for value in a shale play used to be simple, lease acreage in the best quality rock based on Tiers cover large areas. That standard is fading as it has become obvious that the rock is highly variable and the drilling and completion designs are just as important.
========================================
JPT: Heavy Oil Innovation Haunted by Low Oil Prices and Bad Memories
Heavy production spiked in two Canadian wells heated by an electric cable, but it is hard to find customers there at a time when Canadian oil prices and customers remember cables in the past that died young.
========================================
JPT: An Unconventional Challenge: Can Casing Failures During Hydraulic Fracturing Be Stopped?
The shale sector is seeking answers to a complex issue involving casing deformations that block access to long sections of a lateral. As opposed to frac hits, this rising problem is considered to be an intrawell phenomena.
